Al-Kafi fi Fiqh Ahl al-Madina al-Maliki is a concise book on Maliki jurisprudence, authored by Al-Hafiz Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Barr al-Namari al-Qurtubi Abu Umar (368 AH – 463 AH). It is one of the most prominent books of fiqh and is therefore widely circulated among students of knowledge, serving as an important source for the fiqh of the people of Medina according to the Maliki school. In Al-Kafi, the author compiles issues that are foundational principles upon which branches and clarifications in the benefits of rulings and the knowledge of the lawful and unlawful are built. It is designed to be a comprehensive, refined, sufficient, accessible, concise, and chaptered work to be recalled during study and to overcome human weariness. It suffices in place of lengthy works and serves as a tool for review in the absence of formal study. Ibn Abd al-Barr relied on the knowledge of the people of Medina, following the path of Imam Malik ibn Anas's school of thought. He depended on what was authentic from the books of the Malikis and the school of the Medinans, limiting himself to the most sound in knowledge and most reliable in practice, such as the Muwatta, the Mudawwanah, the book of Ibn Abd al-Hakam, al-Mabsut by Ismail al-Qadi, al-Hawi by Abu al-Faraj, the Mukhtasar of Abu Mus'ab, the Muwatta of Abdullah ibn Wahb, the book of Ibn al-Hawwaz, the Mukhtasar of al-Waqar, al-Qubbah, and al-Wadhihah, as well as what the author deemed appropriate for his subject. This is in addition to the author's known strength in weighing conflicting opinions and his strong presence through expressing his choices in many different issues, which highlights the strength of his jurisprudential skills, as well as his excellent presentation, quality of composition, and organization.
