Al-Fatawa al-Mawsiliyya (The Fatwas of Mosul) by Abu Muhammad Izz al-Din Abd al-Aziz bin Abd al-Salam bin Abi al-Qasim bin Hassan al-Sulami al-Shafi'i (577 AH/1181 CE – 660 AH/1262 CE), nicknamed the "Sultan of Scholars," "Seller of Kings," and "Sheikh of Islam." He was a Muslim scholar and judge who excelled in jurisprudence (fiqh), its principles (usul), exegesis (tafsir), and language, reaching the rank of ijtihad (independent legal reasoning).

Al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi said of him: "He reached the rank of ijtihad, and the leadership of the school of thought came to him, along with asceticism, piety, enjoining good and forbidding evil, and firmness in religion. Students sought him from all horizons, and imams graduated under him."

Ibn al-Imad al-Hanbali said: "Izz al-Din, Sheikh of Islam... the distinguished Imam, unique in his era, the Sultan of Scholars... He excelled in jurisprudence, its principles, and the Arabic language, surpassing his peers. He combined various fields of knowledge, including exegesis, hadith, jurisprudence, and the differences among scholars and their sources, reaching the rank of ijtihad. Students traveled to him from all lands, and he authored beneficial works."
