In the 1960s, Salalah fell into the grips of a dangerous trinity: poverty, ignorance, and disease. Its young men left to work in the oil-rich Gulf states, undeterred by the risks of escaping by land, sneaking across the wall, or by sea, braving the treacherous Arabian Sea.

The situation worsened after the start of the Dhofar Rebellion in the mountains. The city was enclosed by an iron fence, separating it from the mountains from east to west down to the sea. Oppression reigned, and Omanis were stripped of their freedom by a flood of prohibitions that denied them a dignified life. 'Al-Haffah,' where the author grew up, was no exception.
