Despite its strong research background, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is said to be complex, difficult to learn, confusing, full of silly metaphors and experiences, and only for high-functioning clients. When applied to emotion regulation, it has been said that ACT is too abstract, non-linear, and lacks specific skills to teach clients.

This book is an attempt to deconstruct all those concepts and show practitioners how ACT, as a contextual and behavioral science, can be applied to clinical work with 'super-feelers': clients who feel too much, too quickly, and are too quick to react (those with borderline personality). This is not a perfect book, but I have certainly done my best to create, organize, and compile ACT session by session for emotion regulation.

This book will briefly guide you through the basic concepts in affective neuroscience and emotion science that underlie ACT, and reframe the concept of emotion regulation through the ACT lens. It will provide you with excerpts from my own creations in each chapter. There is also a set of downloadable materials available on the book's website: this book will help you move super-feelers to experience the world in a new and meaningful way, a way where they don't have to escape their pain but learn to handle it with openness, appreciation, and curiosity.

Over the past fourteen years, I have become a bit obsessed with figuring out how to apply ACT to a specific behavioral repertoire. The book you hold in your hands is part of this clinical endeavor, and in the language of ACT, it is part of my committed action to disseminate and apply contextual behavioral science in specific areas of human struggle.

While this is an academic book that shows you, session by session, the use of ACT procedures for emotion regulation, it does not diminish the suffering of super-feelers, change the flexibility of the model, restrict your clinical skills, or ask you to become a robot. It simply offers you a targeted intervention: ACT for the super-feelers you work with.

I finished writing this book in Bolivia, where I am from, during the hot and humid weather while sipping a delicious cup of tea. I invite you to do the same wherever you are: get your favorite drink, sit in a comfortable position, grab a cozy blanket if you need one, let your mind dive into the pages of this book, and most importantly, do something meaningful with it.
