This book does not belong to history as narrated by historians, nor does it fit the genre of biography as recorded by its subjects. This book is twofold: first, about a cause, and second, about a man. The first is about a nation that resisted to seize its freedom, achieve its unity, accomplish its independence, and enjoy its sovereignty. The second is about a leader from Tripoli who fought the cause's battles in forums and conferences, and led demonstrations in a city that was receptive to his positions and principles. It is a book about Abdel Hamid Karami and his cause. His commitment cost him a great deal, including the magnanimity of a leader and the nobility of his intentions. France exiled him twice, the harshest being his confinement in the prison dungeons on Arwad Island with leaders of the nationalist movement in Syria. He was captured three times, the last being during the battle for independence, where he tasted injustice in the Rashaya Citadel. This book traces the path of the nationalist struggle movement and Abdel Hamid Karami's role within it, and his loudly recorded stances; he refused to be separated from the nation, for Tripoli is Tripoli of Greater Syria (Al-Sham) even if it is in Lebanon. It is a book that rephrases the chronic questions: Why did the resistance movements fail? Why were Arab policies built on defeats? Why did Lebanon fail to build a state? And why did Abdel Hamid Karami despair of the state, calling it a 'farm'? It is a book about a cause lost by the Arabs, and a man lost by the cause and by Lebanon.
