The Abbasid invitation: principles and methods of the Abbasid state is the name given to the third Islamic caliphate in history and the second ruling Islamic dynasty. The Abbasids managed to displace the Umayyads and took control of the caliphate, eliminating the ruling family and pursuing its members until most were wiped out. Those who survived, like Abd al-Rahman ibn Muawiya ibn Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan ibn al-Hakam, fled to Andalusia, where they took over the Iberian Peninsula and maintained control until 1029 AD.
