The book "A Manifesto for Democracy" is, in its spirit and substance, a cry reflecting the intellectual struggle of an emerging writer who closely experienced the precursors of the great crisis in Arab society and its eruption in the mid-seventies. The Lebanese Civil War, in whose shadow and fiery light it was written, had entered its second year with no end in sight. The signs of Arab political disintegration on a regional level warned of real disasters that were soon realized with Egypt's signing of the Camp David Accords.
