Numerous eyes and faces of the alley's residents gathered behind the mashrabiyas overlooking the scene, watching the shouting and the braying donkey that was about to break free from its ordeal. Among these questioning eyes appeared Susen’s, as she stood on a low couch beneath one of the house's mashrabiyas, at the forefront of the alley’s entrance with its three floors. She remained silent and smiling as usual, with one eye on the street watching the coachman’s and donkey’s struggle, and the other eye eagerly waiting for the three-wheeler carrying her father from his government job, sitting in the cylindrical attachment, semi-reclined, beside the driver who occupied the other half, sitting upright.
