The purpose of this book is to understand the present by knowing the past. You may know some things about the present state of psychology from other courses you've taken, but you may not be aware of the connections that exist between the different areas of psychology you've studied. One of the goals of a history of psychology course is to learn about these connections. For example, while I'm sure you know something about the nature-nurture issue, you may not know how our understanding of it has been influenced by Darwin's theory, research in mental testing, and the behavior of rats in mazes. I hope these and other connections will become clear to you after finishing this book.

You will also meet some of the fascinating individuals who helped shape the psychology you are studying. Although we tend to think of these historical figures as distant and different from ordinary people, I have tried to show them as human beings who struggled with many of the same problems that affect us. In the following pages, you will encounter people whose efforts led to extraordinary achievements, but who also dealt with issues that concern you as well.

Therefore, we urge our students to read this book carefully and to absorb every word in it, as the theories and the history of its distinguished figures are an integral part of science, and to lose them is to lose science itself.
