Alone among eight male siblings, at that time, a girl's stay in her family's house was not long. Education for girls did not extend beyond the first three grades, after which a girl would devote herself to housework, helping her mother. Many married at a very young age. Samra finished her primary grades and stayed at home like others. After her brothers went with their father to plow the land, she would assist her mother with weaving, planting in the soil beds around the house garden, cooking, cleaning, and all other household duties. At noon, they would take lunch and go to the field. The family would eat their lunch, then the father would head to his shop. Some brothers would leave to continue their lessons with the 'Kuttab' (local teacher), carrying whatever they could of eggs, food, or wheat as a form of payment for what the teacher taught them of jurisprudence, the Quran, and writing. On the way between Samra's father's land and their home was the 'Pond of Al-Khidr, peace be upon him,' as it was called; it was said to devour the hearts of lovers. In the evening, all family members would be at home. The father would preside over the courtyard on summer nights, sometimes with the men of the town gathering around him. He would boast about his eight sons and never mention his daughter, Samra.
