Labubu is a character created by artist Kasing Lung, first appearing in his illustrated book The Monsters in 2015. It later became a collectible figure through Pop Mart in 2019, quickly rising to icon status in designer toy culture. • The design is inspired by folklore and creative storytelling (similar to The Smurfs or Where the Wild Things Are), featuring pointed ears, large eyes, and a wide grin with nine sharp teeth. • Despite the somewhat odd look, Labubu is portrayed in its stories as a “friendly girl who tries to help—but often ends up causing chaos in unexpected ways.”
Labubu is not alone—it leads a tribe of similar characters: • Zimomo – The tribe leader, larger with a spiked tail. • Mokoko – His cheerful sister, with a heart-shaped nose. • Other members include Tycoco (skeleton-like), Spooky (mysterious), Yaya (mischievous), and Pippo (playful).
🔹 1. Blind Box Strategy • Labubu figures are sold in sealed boxes, creating excitement through the surprise of which figure you get. 🔹 2. The "Ugly-Cute" Aesthetic • Labubu strikes a balance between creepy and adorable, making it a standout in modern toy design. 🔹 3. Celebrity Endorsements • The hype escalated when celebrities like Lisa from BLACKPINK, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and Michelle Yeoh were seen with Labubu accessories. 🔹 4. Market Value • Rare editions have sold for up to $170,000, while regular figures range from $25–$30. • Reselling platforms like eBay and StockX helped push its collector culture.
• In China, Labubu generated over $419 million in revenue by 2024. • It's also massively popular in Japan, Thailand (even used in tourism), and sold in over 50 countries. • Fashion brands have adopted Labubu designs for handbags and accessories.
• Knockoff versions, called “Lafufu”, have emerged due to limited availability. • Some critics call Labubu “creepy” or “demonic.” However, fans on Reddit respond: “They’re a children’s picture book character in plush form … the demon theory is crazy.”
• Blind Box Series V1: Exciting Macaron – 6 regular versions, 1 secret figure, and charm loops for bags. • V2: Have a Seat – Larger scale, various facial expressions, party-themed accessories. • Figurines range from 7–8 cm miniatures to 31-inch (75 cm) display models.
Labubu is more than a toy—it's a global cultural trend that merges nostalgia, emotional value, and consumer excitement. From picture books to fashion, from surprise boxes to six-figure auctions, Labubu proves that a little monster can make a big impact.
